Veteran's Memorial
The Janesville Veterans Memorial in the midst of the city park, located on Old Highway 14, a block west of Janesville’s downtown, is a perpetual, living memory of Veteran's from anywhere in the United States. The only requirement to have a paver placed in our structure is an honorable discharge from a branch of the United States Military.
The Memorial lists the 6 individual military branches Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines and the Air Force. The project was created as a reminder of all the courageous men and women who were willing to put their lives at risk so Americans can be free. For the Veterans left with memories of war and time spent away from loved ones, it's a place to visit, to reflect, to pray, to remember and to cry. For Veterans and their families it's a place created with love so no Veteran is ever forgotten.
Research has concluded as of October 19, 2021, on a limited basis from information provided, we have 13 - Purple Heart recipients, 48 - Bronze Star recipients, 7 - Silver Star recipients, 8 - KIA (killed in action), 103 - World War II, 91 - Korean, 98 - Vietnam, 15 - World War I, 7 - Iraq, 3 - Civil War, 10 - Afghanistan, 1 - Pacific, 1 - Kosovo and 4 - Cuban Crisis, 1 - Pan Am recipient, 1 Gulf War recipient in our Memorial. With history dated from the Civil War to present, you can see we are rich in history and offer an opportunity to expand on it.
With that in mind we are asking for help from Veteran's or their families to include a short history to document each Veteran's military experience which will be added with each name on our website.
Some initial experiences have already been added, with information received from Veterans, families, DD214's (Honorable Discharge Forms), obituaries and newspaper articles.
For additions with new information or corrections to existing information, call Gary Mittelsteadt @ (507) 304-5006, or email to gapfsi@gmail.com. The Janesville Journal will be publishing a random selection of these experiences on Veteran's Day and Memorial Day and may run future articles on a weekly basis.
If you are interested in purchasing a paver block engraved with your Veterans’ name, fill out the form below and bring to City Hall, along with their DD Form 214. There are two different paver sizes listed with different prices.
If you have any questions in regards to the Memorial, please call Gary Mittelsteadt @ (507) 304-5006.
