Rental Licensing & Inspections
City of Janesville requires that all rental properties acquire a rental license issued by the City. The intent of the rental license ordinance is to (1) promote the health, safety, and welfare of the general public; (2) assure preservation of the existing housing supply; (3) help maintain property values; (4) work toward eliminating substandard and deteriorating rental housing; and (5) maintain a living environment that contributes to healthful individual and family living.
To acquire a rental license, each property must:
- Submit the rental license application;
- Submit the appropriate license fee;
- Schedule a rental inspection to be conducted and approved by the City Building Official.
When all the requirements have been met, the rental license will be issued for a period of three (3) years. Each new tenant is required to conduct a criminal background check with the Janesville Police Department.
LANDLORD / TENANT RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES
Certain rights and duties apply to landlords and tenants everywhere in Minnesota. The link provided above provides a summary of the laws that govern the landlord-tenant relationship. The City of Janesville encourages all landlord-tenant civil matters to be resolved between the concerning parties before pursuing legal counsel.
